This article is of a review nature and is aimed at systematizing, comparing, and analyzing recent studies in the field of environmentally safe leather processing methods. International practice considers the advantages and limitations of using plant extracts, natural substances, and waste-recycling approaches. A systematic literature analysis reveals current trends in leather tanning methods. The scientific review covers several relevant research directions focused on the development of environmentally sustainable technologies in the modern leather industry. In particular, the possibilities of developing tanning technologies using extracts from locally sourced plant raw materials, as well as the use of recycled leather in footwear production, especially in insole manufacturing, are analyzed. The study evaluates the environmental impact of new environmentally friendly approaches in comparison with conventional leather processing methods and determines their compliance with the principles of sustainable production. The scientific novelty of the review lies in the comparative analysis of eco-friendly methods, the identification of their development directions, and the demonstration of their application potential under the conditions of Kazakhstan. The implementation of sustainable and resource-saving technologies in domestic leather processing can significantly reduce the environmental impact of production and contribute to the creation of high-quality and safe products.
