Experimental studies have shown that shaping forgings by upsetting in closed dies is not possible, since an annular clamp is formed at the junction of steps of larger and smaller diameters. To eliminate the clamp, the upsetting of stepped shafts with a conical cut is proposed and theoretical studies are carried out. Calculations have shown that metal leakage occurs simultaneously with the upsetting of the conical transition and the risk of clamping is small.
